U.S. consumer sentiment fell to a record low in May as surging gasoline prices linked to the Iran war intensified affordability concerns.
The University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index dropped to 44.8, an all-time low, from 48.2 earlier this month.
Lower-income consumers and those without college degrees were hit hardest, with 57% reporting high prices eroding their personal finances.
