Canada plans to buy a fleet of early warning planes from Sweden's Saab instead of Boeing, aiming to reduce reliance on U.S. defense firms.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the choice of Saab's GlobalEye, based on Bombardier's Global 6500 jet. Boeing's E-7 Wedgetail faced delays and cost overruns.
Carney said the move builds Canadian strategic autonomy, creates jobs, and aligns with partners like France, Sweden, and the UAE.
Saab plans to invest in R&D in Canada under the deal. Military officials indicated a need for six aircraft.
Canada is increasing ties with European defense sectors to diversify away from U.S. weaponry.
