Meta Platforms' plan to collect detailed records of U.S. employees' computer usage for training its AI models is more extensive than initially described and set to capture non-U.S. data in the process, according to internal documentation seen by Reuters.
The tool, called Model Capability Initiative (MCI), tracks mouse movements, clicks, and navigation, and pulls data from over 200 apps and websites. CEO Mark Zuckerberg aims to transform Meta around AI agents.
While Meta says MCI only impacts U.S. employees, internal documents reveal it captures emails and messages sent to U.S. personnel from anywhere, raising GDPR concerns. Privacy groups warn of a new European legal battle.
Meta spokesperson Dave Arnold stated that safeguards are in place, but experts argue the data collection violates GDPR's purpose limitation principle. The Irish Data Protection Commission has been notified.
