A Kentucky school district secured approximately $27 million in settlements from social media companies over claims they fueled a student mental-health crisis.
Meta Platforms paid the largest amount at $9 million. Snap Inc paid $8 million, ByteDance paid $8 million, and Alphabet paid $2.01 million.
Breathitt County School District had accused the companies of designing platforms to keep young users hooked, driving anxiety and depression. The district sought over $60 million.
The companies denied the allegations but resolved the claims amicably. This case was seen as a bellwether for 1,200 other school districts pursuing similar claims.
Settlement agreements were signed in May, according to records obtained by Bond.az. The funds will be used for mental health programs.
