Experts from the University of Bonn analyzed the environmental impact of kitchen sponges. The study was published in the journal "Environmental Advances".

It found that sponges wear out over time, releasing microplastics. Annual waste per person ranges from 0.68 to 4.21 grams.

The main cause of environmental damage is not microplastics but water consumption. Reducing water use while washing dishes yields the biggest benefit.

Experts recommend choosing sponges with less plastic and using them for as long as possible.
