European car sales rose in April, boosted by strong demand for electric and hybrid vehicles.
New EU car registrations climbed 5.1% year-on-year to 972,314 vehicles, ACEA data showed.
Battery-electric vehicle sales surged 37.7%.
Tesla registrations jumped 67.2% to 9,169 vehicles, lifting its market share to 0.9%.
Chinese automakers also gained. BYD more than doubled EU sales. Chery registrations nearly quadrupled.
SAIC Motor's MG brand reported a 24.6% rise.
For January-April, registrations rose 4.2%, with EVs holding 19.7% market share.
