New Jersey's governor ordered state police to assume control outside a migrant detention center in Newark, a flashpoint for protests.
Governor Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat, said she acted to quell escalating tensions and violence at Delaney Hall, a 1,000-bed facility run by Geo Group for ICE.
State police set up protected protest zones and vehicle checkpoints. ICE agents agreed to withdraw from the immediate area.
Sherrill emphasized ensuring freedom of assembly and public safety, while calling for the facility's closure.
