A gas explosion at a coal mine in northern China's Shanxi province has left eight people dead and 38 trapped underground, according to state news agency Xinhua.
The blast occurred late Friday at the Liushenyu mine in Qinyuan county. A total of 247 workers were on duty underground at the time.
By early Saturday, 201 miners had been brought to the surface, including eight confirmed dead. Rescue efforts continue.
