Oil prices rose in early Asian trade on Tuesday after reports of fresh US attacks on Iran. This overshadowed hopes for a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Brent oil futures for July opened nearly 2% higher at $97.84 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 1.2% to $91.40 a barrel.
Brent had slid nearly 3% on Monday. But evening reports said the US launched fresh strikes on missile launch sites and mine-laying boats in southern Iran.
The US military claimed the strikes were in "self-defense" and that a ceasefire with Iran remained in place. Tehran's response was not immediately clear. But renewed military action complicates ongoing peace negotiations.
The fresh attacks largely offset earlier reports that the US and Iran had reached a framework deal to end the war and reopen Hormuz. Oil prices had fallen sharply on Monday on those reports.
