Chinese and Russian leaders are set to meet in Beijing on Wednesday for a summit featuring discussions on bilateral and international issues, capped by an intimate chat over tea.
The meeting follows U.S. President Donald Trump's visit to the Chinese capital, and its outcomes will be closely watched.
Xi Jinping is known for hosting leaders over tea. His last meeting with Putin involved them removing ties and talking outdoors.
Trump's visit was more choreographed. Beijing is using these visits to boost its global image.
Putin was greeted by China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Around 40 documents are expected to be signed.
Bilateral trade rose 16.1% in the first four months of 2025, recovering from a decline last year.
Energy issues, including the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline, will be on the agenda.
