Bond.az - AT&T Inc. announced a $19 billion investment commitment for California's fiber and wireless networks through 2030.
The telecom giant plans to bring fiber internet to over 4 million additional households and businesses and add more than 1,200 new cell sites across the state by 2030. This investment is $3 billion more than what the company spent in California during the 2021-2025 period.
AT&T will begin upgrading customers from copper-based services to fiber and wireless on or after June 1, 2027. About 3% of households it serves in California still use traditional phone service.
The modernization is enabled by updated federal policies. AT&T expects to save 300 million kilowatt-hours annually by 2030 through the transition from copper infrastructure.
Traditional home phone customers in affected areas will receive AT&T Phone - Advanced service free for three months. Customers can keep their numbers and the service works with existing phones, fax machines, home alarms, and medical monitors.
AT&T plans to hire hundreds of technicians to support the fiber expansion and copper decommissioning. It will also open six additional Connected Learning Centers and host over 30 digital literacy workshops across California in 2026.
The company committed an additional $1.2 million to California nonprofits focused on closing the digital divide, disaster preparedness, and support for older adults and tribal members in 2026.
AT&T reaffirmed its 2026 and multi-year financial guidance. The California investment supports its plans to reach more than 60 million fiber locations across the U.S. by 2030.
