China remained Germany's biggest trading partner in the first quarter of 2026, but only narrowly ahead of the United States as German exports to China fell sharply, according to new calculations.

Total trade in goods with China in the first quarter was €61.5 billion, ahead of €60 billion with the United States and €52.8 billion with the Netherlands.

Expert Christina Otte noted that the United States could move back ahead of China over the course of the year.
