British corporation Rolls-Royce is returning to the production of engines for narrow-body passenger airliners after a break of more than ten years.
According to the Financial Times, the manufacturer is designing the UltraFan 30 engine for successors to the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 MAX.
The plan requires billions of pounds in investment, an industrial partner for mass production, and support from the UK government. It is also crucial that the engine is approved and selected by Airbus and Boeing.
Rolls-Royce has already allocated over £1 billion to the development of UltraFan series technologies.
