The Supreme Court has reduced the sentence of G. Suleymanli, convicted in a fatal traffic accident.
Presided over by Judge Zaur Huseynov, the court granted the cassation appeal, reducing the prison term from 5 years and 2 months to 4 years and 6 months.
The incident occurred in September 2023 in the Khatai district. Driver G. Suleymanli, driving a Toyota Prius, violated traffic rules while entering the main road.
The other driver, A. Salimli, driving an Opel Astra, also exceeded the speed limit. The collision caused one of the vehicles to hit a pregnant woman, G. Mehdiyev.
The 30-32 week fetus sustained severe injuries and died, while the woman died in hospital a few days later.
The first instance court sentenced G. Suleymanli to 5 years and 2 months, and A. Salimli to 5 years. The appellate court equalized the sentences.
After the cassation appeal, the Supreme Court reduced G. Suleymanli's sentence to 4 years and 6 months, to be served in a settlement-type penal institution.
