The cassation appeal of Gurbat Shahverdiyev, accused of setting fire to the house of his ex-wife and children in Absheron, was reviewed.
The Supreme Court, chaired by Judge Tayyub Mukhtarov, rejected the appeal.
According to the indictment, after being released from prison, Gurbat Shahverdiyev had a property dispute with his ex-wife E.Sh. While intoxicated, he went to their former marital home in Ashagi Guzdak settlement, Absheron district. He forced his ex-wife and children to leave. Then he lit a cigarette and threw the burning lighter onto the bed. After ensuring the lighter would not go out, he went into the yard and later saw the house on fire. The accused deliberately caused significant damage, destroying property worth 50,000 manat.
In court, the ex-wife stated that Gurbat had said 'I'll surprise you' a few days before the incident.
The court sentenced Gurbat Shahverdiyev to 3 years and 8 months in prison.
