June 5 marks the birthday of prominent Azerbaijani poet Mikayil Mushfig.
Mikayil Abdulgadir oglu Ismayilzade was born in 1908 in Baku to an intelligent family.
His father Mirza Abdulgadir Ismayilzade was a well-known intellectual of the time.
Mushfig lost his parents early and was raised by relatives.
He received his primary education at a Russian-Tatar school.
After the Soviet rule, he studied at Baku Teachers' Seminary and School No. 12.
He graduated from the Language and Literature Faculty of Azerbaijan State University.
He began his career as a teacher, last working at Secondary School No. 18 in Baku.
In 1926, his poem "Bir gun" was published in the "Ganch Ishi" newspaper.
He married Dilbar Akhundzade in 1931.
A victim of repression, he was executed on January 6, 1938.
In 1968, Dilbar Akhundzade's memoir "My Mushfig Days" was published.
A bust was erected in Baku, and a settlement, school, street, and square were named after him.
In 2018, President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree for his 110th anniversary.
