The head of UN-Habitat for Brazil, Rayne Ferretti, spoke at the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku.
He stated that water supply is a key pillar of urban planning and it is wrong to treat this resource as infinite.
“We need sustainable citizens more than sustainable cities,” Ferretti emphasized.
In Brazil and many Latin American countries, cities have long developed without considering water resources. As a result, most major natural disasters today are water-related.
In the past, rivers were covered and isolated from the urban environment, but now there is a global trend to reintegrate rivers into city life.
The UN-Habitat official noted that planning cities according to nature's principles, increasing green areas, and managing water efficiently are key directions for the future.
