Gaza flotilla activists detained by Israel and taunted by the far-right police minister have been released from prison and will be deported to Turkey on Thursday, officials said.
The activists were arrested at a southern Israeli port after the navy intercepted their protest flotilla in international waters. Their treatment under Itamar Ben-Gvir's direction drew international outcry and a rebuke from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Flotilla organizers say they aim to break Israel's blockade of Gaza by delivering humanitarian aid. About 430 activists were released and will be deported via Ramon airport near Eilat.
Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said his country is conducting special flights to bring Turkish citizens and third-country participants. Those on board include citizens of Spain, South Korea, and Ireland.
Ben-Gvir's video shows an activist forced to the ground. 'Look at them now, not heroes,' he says. Transport chief Miri Regev posted her own video, saying 'This is what should be done to supporters of terror.'
Netanyahu said Ben-Gvir's conduct was 'not in line with Israel's values.' U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee said he 'betrayed the dignity of his nation.'
