Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday the military had struck Mohammad Odeh, whom he described as Hamas' new armed wing chief in Gaza.

Netanyahu stated Odeh headed Hamas' intelligence division during the October 7, 2023 attack and was appointed about a week ago to replace Izz al-Din al-Haddad, killed by Israel on May 15.

Sources close to Hamas did not confirm Odeh's appointment but agreed he was seen as Haddad's possible successor.

Hours earlier, Israel announced expanded ground operations in Lebanon, intensifying military activities on multiple fronts.

Gaza health officials said two people, including a woman, were killed and over 20 wounded in the Israeli strike that destroyed an apartment building in Gaza City.

Hamas had no immediate comment.
