An ancient meteorite that fell on Australia 100 million years ago brought a "gold rain".
According to ANSA news agency, impact traces were found in a previously unknown crater over 4 km in diameter. The crater is located 50 km north of Kalgoorlie, a gold-rich region.
Geologist Raiza Quinteron led a team that discovered gravitational anomalies in the circular zone. Excavations revealed evidence that the impact was powerful enough to melt rocks and deform crystals. The collision ejected gold-bearing debris into the air.
The newly found crater has been temporarily named "Ora-Banda". With this discovery, the number of confirmed meteorite craters in Australia reaches 34.
