The number of Canadian residents traveling to the US dropped by 42% over the past year, causing an estimated $8.4 billion loss to the US economy.
Oxu.Az reports that CBC television cited a study by the University of Toronto.
The steepest decline was in South Carolina (65%), followed by Florida, Boston, New York, and San Francisco (all over 50%).
The sharp drop in tourist flows to the US occurred after President Donald Trump repeatedly claimed that many Canadians support their country becoming the 51st US state.
Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by stating that Canada will never become part of the US.
