Democratic senators in the U.S. Congress are pushing for an investigation into funds allocated for the production of a $250 bill featuring President Donald Trump.
According to Axios, the senators have asked the Treasury Department's Inspector General to examine the costs of what they call an "illegal $250 bill."
U.S. law prohibits the portrait of a living person on currency or securities. In a letter quoted by the outlet, the Democrats stated: "At a time when Americans continue to face rising prices, the Treasury should focus on addressing economic challenges instead of allocating resources to what appears to be an illegal project driven by presidential vanity."
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously said the administration would not pursue the Trump bill without congressional support. The Washington Post reported that if issued, Trump would be the first living person to appear on U.S. paper currency in 150 years.
