Ebola virus is spreading at an unprecedented speed in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Alan Gonzalez, deputy director of operations for Doctors Without Borders, said that such a high number of infections recorded shortly after the epidemic was declared is unprecedented in Ebola history.
He stated: "Two weeks after the epidemic declaration, the situation remains a serious concern, and response measures are lagging behind the virus's spread rate."
New suspected cases are reported daily, but hundreds of samples have yet to be tested. The closure of borders and airports is complicating the delivery of medicines, humanitarian aid, and experts to the region.
The DRC government declared the Ebola epidemic on May 15. The virus strain is reported to be Ebola-Bundibugyo. Currently, the main outbreak is in Ituri province. In total, over 1,000 suspected cases and about 240 deaths have been recorded.
