Only 6% of apartments in Germany are equipped with air conditioning. Despite rising demand, cooling systems are still considered a luxury.
According to the "ClimaMeter" project, demand for ACs increased by 75% between 2019 and 2024, but only 6% of apartments have them.
Steyn Renneboq from "Eurovent" says cooling is often seen as a luxury. "Boston Consulting Group" notes that installation in old buildings faces regulatory and aesthetic obstacles.
Tenants don't want to invest in property they don't own, and owners often refuse installation.
Environmental concerns also exist: cooling uses about 10% of global electricity, mostly from fossil fuels. Widespread AC use can raise outdoor temperatures by several degrees.
