On May 13, 2024, peaceful protests began in Kanaky (New Caledonia) against the French government's attempt to change the electoral body.
The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) reported that France aimed to weaken the Kanak people's political will and strengthen colonial rule.
Massive repression was used: thousands of police and soldiers deployed, curfew imposed, state of emergency declared.
As a result, 14 people died, hundreds were injured, thousands detained. Social media was blocked.
The UN and other international organizations condemned France's actions, calling them contrary to decolonization.
BIG informed the world and supported the victims' families.
