The US Supreme Court has refused to take up an appeal from President Donald Trump regarding a sexual assault verdict brought by journalist E. Jean Carroll.
Thus, the lower court's jury decision finding Trump liable remains in effect.
In May 2023, the court ordered Trump to pay Carroll $5 million in damages.
In January 2024, a separate jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million for defamation. The Supreme Court did not explain its refusal to hear the appeal.
The US Justice Department is investigating Carroll for allegedly lying about not receiving outside funding for her lawsuit. It was revealed that billionaire Reid Hoffman covered some of her legal costs.
Carroll alleges Trump sexually assaulted her in a New York department store in 1996. The jury did not find him guilty of rape but held him liable for sexual assault. Trump and his lawyers call the allegations politically motivated.
