The US Army may execute four soldiers for the first time since 1961. According to ABC News, citing internal planning documents, the convicts were imprisoned for murder and rape.
The plan, named "Operation Resolute Justice," was drafted in February. The convicts will be transferred from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to a prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Army spokeswoman Cynthia Smith confirmed that relevant training has been conducted over the past 20 years. She described it as a standard planning component against a possible order from the White House.
The last military execution took place in 1961, when Private John Bennett was executed in Austria for raping and attempting to murder an 11-year-old girl.
