In May, air temperatures in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula were above normal for 22 days and below normal for 9 days, according to Nazim Mahmudov, head of the National Hydrometeorology Service.
The average monthly temperature was 18°C, 1°C above the climate norm. The maximum temperature in Baku was 32°C on May 13 in Mashtaga, and 33°C in Kurdamir in the regions. The minimum temperature was 9°C in Baku and -2°C frost in the highlands at Shahdag.
Rainfall significantly exceeded norms. The highest precipitation fell in Baku and Absheron – 148 mm (749% of the norm). In the Balakan-Shaki zone, 206 mm was recorded, and in Lankaran-Astara, 85 mm. Snow cover reached 9 cm at Shahdag on May 9.
Hail events were also observed during the month, mainly in Baku, Absheron, Gadabay, Shamkir, Shusha, and other districts. Hailstone diameters ranged from 4-20 mm, with the largest at 30 mm in Oghuz.
Windy days totaled 11 in Baku and 18 in the regions, with maximum wind speeds reaching 28 m/s. A total of 10 yellow and orange warnings were issued.
