Lam Research is focusing on adding sensing and AI capabilities to its semiconductor manufacturing tools to boost productivity, CEO Tim Archer told Reuters.
The company plans expanded operations in Arizona and California.
Archer said the two-year strategy involves equipping tools with more sensors to generate data for AI analysis, helping customers produce chips with fewer defects.
At its Fremont headquarters, Lam awarded a $250,000 investment to startup Lightfinder, an MIT spinout that miniaturized a chip measurement tool for integration into existing machines.
"The more data you collect, the better your models can predict and react to problems," Archer said.
He also confirmed Lam will open an additional facility near Phoenix to support customers like TSMC and increase investments at its California headquarters.
