Mexican midfielder Gilberto Mora has matched a unique record held by Brazilian legend Pele in World Cup history.
According to Opta statistics, the 17-year-old started in the Round of 16 clash against Ecuador, playing 59 minutes in a 2-0 victory.
Mora becomes only the second player under 18 to start in a World Cup knockout match, following Pele in 1958. Pele was 17 years and 239 days old, while Mora was 17 years and 259 days.
The win secured Mexico's first knockout-stage victory since 1986, advancing them to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Mexico will face the winner of England vs. DR Congo.
WC 2026, featuring 48 teams, is hosted by USA, Canada, and Mexico, with the final on July 19.
