Russian gastroenterologist Olga Chistik emphasizes the importance of washing bananas before consumption.
Chistik told Lenta.ru that bananas are treated with fungicides and pesticides to prevent damage during transport. Some of these chemicals remain on the peel.
Additionally, banana peels can harbor E. coli, salmonella, listeria, and parasite eggs. When peeling, microbes transfer to hands and knife, then to the fruit.
While healthy individuals may not experience serious issues, children, pregnant women, and the elderly are at risk. Eating unwashed bananas can cause food infections, poisoning, and acute gastroenteritis.
The doctor recommends washing bananas under cold running water for 20-30 seconds, and if needed, scrubbing with a soft brush. Avoid using soap.
