France's nuclear deterrence plan differs from the NATO model. It does not involve permanent deployment or joint use of nuclear weapons.
According to Der Spiegel, citing sources, Paris is not discussing the NATO joint use model where German jets carry US bombs and the US president decides on strikes.
Instead, Paris proposes providing airspace access, airbases, and refueling for French jets. Temporary deployments are possible.
France has about 290 nuclear warheads, deployed on submarines (M51 missiles) and Rafale jets.
In March, the German Chancellor and French President signed a joint declaration to deepen nuclear cooperation.
