Google has asked U.S. authorities for permission to release 32 million male mosquitoes in California and Florida. The goal is to curb the spread of dangerous viruses.

The "Debug" project targets the Aedes aegypti species, which carries diseases like yellow fever, dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. Lab-reared males infected with Wolbachia bacteria do not bite.

When these males mate with wild females, the eggs do not develop. This reduces the population of disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Scientists use AI, computer vision, and big data analytics. Traditional methods like pesticides are both risky for the environment and often ineffective.

The EPA is reviewing the request. Public comments end on June 5. The project was successful in Singapore, reducing the mosquito population by 80-90% and dengue cases by over 70%.
