Mutant pigs are rapidly multiplying in the radiation zone around Japan's Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant, according to the UK's Mirror.
After the 2011 disaster, domestic pigs escaped from abandoned farms and crossbred with wild boars, creating a hybrid offspring with rapid reproduction traits.
Researchers from Hirosaki and Fukushima universities found that the reproductive cycle of these hybrids is significantly shorter than that of ordinary wild boars, leading to exponential population growth.
Now considered an aggressive invasive species, these animals cause serious damage to farmland, injure pets, and disrupt the local ecosystem.
With human depopulation near Fukushima, the boar population has exploded. Japanese authorities are deeply concerned about mutant pigs taking over residential areas.
