British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called on tech giants like Apple and Google to restrict children's access to pornography, threatening sanctions if they fail to act. Speaking at a London conference, Starmer emphasized the need for immediate action.
In an interview with Sky News, he stated: "I believe they can find a solution. But if they decide not to, then we will take action. We will change the law. Because when it comes to our children's safety, standing aside is not an option."
According to the government, London intends to mandate that smartphones and tablets come pre-equipped with features blocking nude images when used by children. Adults will still have access with proper age verification. This would make the UK the first country where children cannot technically take, share, or view nude photos.
Companies have been given three months to comply. Otherwise, legislation will be enacted, with fines and potential criminal liability for non-compliance. Starmer also pledged over £400 million for national computing power and AI chips.
