Uganda's Ministry of Health has imposed a temporary ban on handshakes and other physical greetings across the country. The decision follows the confirmation of two Ebola cases amid an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Health official Diana Atwine stated that the measure aims to prevent further spread of the virus. Special surveillance and rapid response teams have been deployed to track contacts and control potential infection hotspots.
One of the confirmed patients, a Congolese citizen, died at Kibuli Muslim Hospital in Uganda. The other patient is receiving treatment at an isolation center at Mulago National Referral Hospital.
The World Health Organization announced on May 7 that a new Ebola flare-up had been recorded in Ituri province, northeastern DRC.
