The administration of US President Donald Trump is increasingly leaning towards a military intervention option in Cuba.
According to Politico, Trump and his team are growing frustrated that the US pressure campaign, including fuel blockade, has not forced Cuban leadership to agree to political and economic reforms. As a result, they are taking the military option more seriously than before.
Sources said Washington initially hoped that sanctions, oil blockade, and operations against Iran and Venezuela would push Havana to negotiate, but that did not happen.
The article highlights that US officials are also considering the possibility of capturing Raul Castro, one of the leaders of the Cuban revolution.
"But American military officials are exploring various options beyond capturing one or two people. The scale of possible military actions ranges from a single air strike designed to intimidate the leadership into concessions to a ground intervention aimed at overthrowing the government," the journalist noted.
According to the newspaper, in recent weeks, the US Southern Command has begun developing plans for military operations against the island.
