The longest word in English, consisting of approximately 190,000 letters, has no practical significance and is not actually used in speech.
According to Oxu.Az, this was stated by New York University linguist Laurel MacKenzie in an interview with RIA Novosti. The word is the chemical name of the largest known protein molecule. It contains 189,819 letters and can take up to three and a half hours to fully pronounce.
MacKenzie noted that it is difficult to imagine any situation where such a word could be practically used. She also emphasized that whether such compounds are considered words depends on the criteria applied, particularly the need for their use and regular occurrence in speech.
The scholar also noted that there is no separate scientific field dedicated to identifying and recording the longest words. However, lexicographers may show interest in such matters.
