May 31 marks the birthday of Sara Gadimova, People's Artist of Azerbaijan, born in 1922 in Baku, originally from Abdal-Gulabli village in Agdam.
She started her career in 1941 as a soloist at the Muslim Magomayev Philharmonic. During WWII, her song "Sister of Mercy" became an anthem for Azerbaijani soldiers.
Influenced by masters like Huseynqulu Sarabski and Khan Shushinski, she remained faithful to classical traditions.
At the Azerbaijan Opera and Ballet Theatre, she performed roles like Layli and Asli, and sang mughams such as "Bayati-Shiraz", "Shur", and "Shahnaz". Her rendition of "Garabagh Shikastasi" is iconic.
With over 60 years of artistry, she served Azerbaijani culture. She passed away on May 12, 2005.
