Jeyhun Aliyev, director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Center, stated that 150,000 sturgeons are planned to be released into the Caspian Sea this month.
Speaking at an event dedicated to the International Day for Biological Diversity, Aliyev told journalists: "The Caspian Sea and its ecosystem are considered a unique natural system. The conservation and restoration of fish resources are among the main activities of the Fisheries Experiment Center under the Ministry of Agriculture."
Sturgeons and Caspian salmon are among the species threatened with extinction. Their protection and restoration are a significant responsibility. To this end, a new fish release campaign has been launched in the Caspian.
During the campaign, sturgeons weighing between 300-500 grams and Caspian salmon are being released into the Caspian shores. Over the season, it is planned to release more than 500,000 sturgeons and over 50,000 Caspian salmon.
Only this month, 150,000 sturgeons are scheduled for release. Some of the released fish are specimens grown in previous years. Additionally, it is planned to release 500,000 fingerlings weighing 3-5 grams from this year's incubation into the natural environment.
The release process is mainly carried out in spring and autumn. In spring, 150,000 sturgeons are targeted, while in autumn, 350,000 are planned. The director added that releases will continue regularly and state measures for the protection of rare species will persist.
