16 years ago, Azerbaijan took a major step in the automotive industry: the country started its own car production. Citizens hoped locally made cars would be cheaper than foreign brands. But over time, expectations were not fully met.
Why is interest in local cars low?
According to Baku TV, experts say the main reason is that foreign cars are sold at more affordable prices. Drivers also prefer foreign brands in terms of quality, technology, and spare parts.
Transport expert Eldeniz Jafarov notes: “After Chinese automakers exported to post-Soviet countries, demand for domestic production decreased. Price competitiveness is key. It would be better if government agencies prioritized local vehicles.”
Economist Khalid Karimli states: “Azerbaijan's car factories can neither access foreign markets nor fully meet domestic demand. Production capacity and technological capabilities must be expanded. The current situation does not allow for exports, and the factories' market share is very small.”
