A spherical stone sphere, unique for the South Caucasus, has been discovered in Jalilabad district.
The find was made during archaeological excavations at the Pashatepe monument led by Vafa Mahmudova, a senior researcher at the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS.
The stone sphere dates back to the Neolithic period and has no holes or impact marks. It weighs 1 kg 870 g and is about 10 cm in diameter.
Scientists suspect it was used for ritual purposes or as a weight. Further research will determine its exact function.
Excavations at Pashatepe have been expanded, revealing medieval clay pipes. The Alikomaktepe monument was also inspected.
