The 2026 FIFA World Cup has set a new record for the number of own goals.
The record was set during the Round of 16 match between Australia and Egypt. Egypt defender Mohamed Hani scored his second own goal of the tournament.
He had previously scored an own goal against Belgium in the group stage (1-1 draw).
With this, the total number of own goals in the 2026 World Cup reached 13. The previous record was 12, set at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The tournament, hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico with 48 teams, will conclude on July 19.
