Cape Verde national team captain Ryan Mendes is under investigation for allegedly raping a Brazilian woman.

New Zealand police are handling the case. The incident occurred during Cape Verde's stay in New Zealand in March 2026.

The victim worked as a translator for the team. She claims Mendes entered her room, assaulted, choked, beat and bit her before raping her.

Mendes played three games in the 2026 World Cup but did not score.
