In the 2026 World Cup Group H, Cape Verde made history against Uruguay (2-2). The African side became the first team to score their debut goal in the tournament from a direct free kick.

According to "OptaJoe", the goal was scored by Kevin Lenini, a midfielder for Russia's Krasnodar.

Cape Verde thus etched their name in World Cup history with a unique achievement.
