Lithuanian coach Valdas Dambrauskas has made history by becoming the first foreign head coach to achieve a "golden double" in Azerbaijan with "Sabah" club.
According to Oxu.Az citing the Professional Football League (PFL), the Masazir-based team secured the Misli Premier League title before the season ended. Then, in the Azerbaijan Cup final, they defeated "Zirə" 2-1 to complete the double.
"Sabah" celebrated its first-ever golden double, becoming the fifth club to win both the league and cup in the same season.
Previously, only four clubs had achieved the golden double 11 times. "Qarabag" leads with 6 times (1993, 2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2021/2022, 2023/2024). "Neftchi" has 3 (1995/1996, 2003/2004, 2012/2013). "Kapaz" (1997/1998) and "Khazar Lankaran" (2006/2007) each won once.
Before Dambrauskas, all 11 golden doubles were achieved by local coaches. Record-holder Gurban Gurbanov won 5 times (2014/2015, 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2021/2022, 2023/2024). Kazbek Tuayev (1995/1996, 2003/2004) and Agasalim Mirjavadov (1993, 2006/2007) each won twice. Mehman Allahverdiyev (1997/1998) and Boyukaga Hajiyev (2012/2013) each won once.
