Former England national team captain David Beckham has become the first athlete in UK history to reach billionaire status.
According to Oxu.Az, this was reported by the prestigious publication The Times.
The 51-year-old athlete and his wife, singer and designer Victoria Beckham, have a combined wealth currently estimated at £1.185 billion. It is noted that the couple's financial situation has more than doubled in the last year alone.
According to The Times' analysis, this sharp increase is mainly due to Beckham's investment in MLS club Inter Miami, of which he has been a co-owner since 2018. Currently, the value of Beckham's stake in the team, where eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi also plays, is approximately £300 million.
Recall that Forbes' latest billionaire list includes athletes Michael Jordan ($4.3 billion), Magic Johnson ($1.6 billion), LeBron James ($1.4 billion), Tiger Woods ($1.5 billion), and Roger Federer ($1.1 billion).
Beckham, who ended his professional career in 2013, has played for Manchester United, Real Madrid, PSG, AC Milan, and LA Galaxy. He has won league titles in England, Spain, and France, as well as the UEFA Champions League.
The star footballer made 115 appearances for the England national team and captained the side for six years.
