Former Copenhagen and multiple Italian club defender Marios Oikonomou has been hospitalized in critical condition following a road traffic accident.
According to Protothema, the incident occurred on Saturday in Ioannina, Greece.
Oikonomou, who was riding a motorcycle, collided with a car under unclear circumstances. The former defender sustained severe head injuries.
The Greek footballer underwent emergency surgery and is currently in the intensive care unit under neurosurgery supervision, with his condition described as critical.
Oikonomou, 33, won the Danish championship with Copenhagen between 2020 and 2023. He also played for Italian clubs Cagliari, Bologna, Sampdoria, and Greek clubs AEK and Panetolikos.
Oikonomou ended his professional career in July 2024.
