Former Greek footballer dies after accident

Former Greece international footballer Marios Oikonomou dies in hospital after a motorcycle crash.

Former Greek national team and several Italian clubs defender Marios Oikonomou has died in hospital after a road accident.

The 33-year-old crashed his motorcycle into a reversing truck in Ioannina, Greece, on May 23. He was rushed to hospital with severe head injuries but died a few days later in intensive care.

Oikonomou played six matches for Greece between 2016 and 2018. At club level, he represented Cagliari, Bologna, SPAL, AEK, Bari, Copenhagen, Sampdoria, and others.
