Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo dedicated his goal against Morocco in the World Cup 2026 round of 16 to his unborn son who died in the womb.

Gakpo and his girlfriend Noa van der Bij announced in May they were expecting their second child, due in October.

However, the day before the match, the baby passed away in the womb. After scoring the opener, Gakpo knelt and wept, supported by his teammates.

Morocco eventually won the match on penalties.
